Caries prevention does not start only when there are teeth. If the gums are still clean, they will keep future teeth safe from bacteria.
Unfortunately, even if baby does not like to brush his teeth he will have to do it if he does not want to hate the dentist one day! From birth, a cleaning of the gums is necessary.
The toothpaste is not mandatory because it has no cleaning properties. On the other hand, for the baby to still have a pleasant taste in the mouth, one can use a toothpaste without fluoride expressly made for the babies. Since children do not have the reflex to spit, it is recommended to use this paste until the child is able to spit.
If the water in your municipality is fluoridated, it is not mandatory to give your child a fluoride supplement. However, if it is not, ask a doctor or dentist about the use of a fluoride supplement. Do not give extra if the water in your municipality is already fluoridated: teeth that will no longer be able to absorb fluoride will be tainted with an unsightly greyish or even purple color!
- Bad habits that a child should not take are:
Fall asleep with a bottle of milk or juice: the milk contains lactose, harmful to the teeth, and the juice obviously contains sugar (moreover, when the baby drinks, there are high risks that it s ‘muffled). If the baby falls asleep with a bottle, the lactose in the milk and the sugar in the juice sticks to the gums and / or teeth, which causes the formation of bacteria that will become caries, this is what call caries baby bottle. In addition, the risk of the baby making whitish patches in the mouth increases considerably.
- First visit to the dentist
The first visit to the dentist is recommended around the age of 3 years. During our own appointments and this, from the youngest age of the baby, it would be ideal to take our child, a question he is familiar with the environment.
All children are fearful of the unknown. It is possible that at the first visit, the hygienist may do nothing more than a general examination. The child must adapt to this new environment, these instruments, these smells, and it is up to the hygienist to do this work and not you. One must never prepare a child for his first visit to the dentist, moreover, is it prepared to go to the mall to buy him underwear? The same goes for the visit to the dentist: it is left to the hygienist and the dentist to explain to the child what will happen during his visit.
However, there is nothing to prevent him from mentioning that he has become old enough to visit the dentist before the first visit, and if any questions arise, mention that the dentist is the doctor of the teeth, that’s all.
Often, the fear that children feel has been transmitted by parents. This is why we should not explain at length what will happen during the visit to the dentist. In addition, it is best not to mention any sting! We use other terms to talk about anesthesia to the child. Nor is it mentioned that “it does not hurt”, because sometimes at the dentist’s, it can be sensitive, it’s useless to lie to your child and thus undermine his confidence in you.
If the child did not do well at the first visit, it is important not to tell him that he is not a big one, that he has disappointed us or even that he is mean. He will be discouraged next time and remember everything that happened.
In spite of all the efforts you and the dental staff have made to reassure your child, it is possible that he or she is not interested in the dentist. There are dentists who specialize in child care which is called the pediatric dentists. It may be suggested to refer some children and extreme cases to them.
